There are over 900 churches in Rome Italy! This fact about the Eternal City is amazing!

Just strolling the neighborhoods of Rome, you can't help but discover a church on every block, or so it seems....each one containing numerous hidden treasures. These churches, which are steeped in history, contain stunning art masterpieces, miraculous relics, incorruptible saints and so much more.

This is one of my favorite things about Rome and I plan to go into detail in this section of my website to encourage and educate my visitors to explore these holy sites! Rome is a perfect pilgrimage destination to renew and deepen one's faith.

History of the Roman Catholic Church

The history of the Catholic church comes alive in this beautiful city!

After being giving the "keys to the Kingdom" by Jesus, St. Peter arrived in Rome in 42AD and was cruicifed here in 67AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Nero. Old St. Peter's Basilica built by Emperor Constantine between 319AD and 333AD was built over the burial place of Peter. The altar of the present Basilica of Saint Peter, built between 1506 and 1615, is directly over St. Peter's tomb.

St Peters Basilica or Basilica San Pietro, which is considered the largest Christian Church in the world. The present Basilica is built over Old St. Peter's Basilica. Emperor Constantine ordered the old church to be built between 319 and 333AD over the burial site of St. Peter.

This magnificent Basilica is a "must see" on any Rome Italy vacation. Its beauty and grandeur will take your breath away and it is one of these most important and holy pilgrimage places for Roman Catholics from around the world.

Favorite Rome Churches

I must admit, though, that some of our favorite churches in rome have been smaller, less known ones we've inadvertantly found on our various walking tours of Rome. Stepping inside these gems we experienced "another world" filled with the beauty of art and faith! As you stroll the wonderful neighborhoods in Rome, make sure and explore these wonderful treasures.

A couple that we have discovered are Church of St. Barbara e S. Tommaso d'Aquina dei Librari, St. Bartholomew on Tiber Island and Church of the Gesù or Chiesa del Gesù.
